Who knew that I would find this? Ghent, Belgium has a reputation for being a Medieval City and it certainly does not disappoint. The scope and breadth of the buildings in this city is quite impressive.
Indeed, there is the touristy, reclaimed part of the river (below....and the Gravensteen Castle above is certainly reclaimed), but it is impressive all around.
Kayaks by night on the river.
The 300 ft. tall belfry of Ghent. (There are three medieval towers in the old city.) It's bell would serve to toll the time and warn of attacks.
St. Nicholas Church and tower (above)
St. Michael, (above) which claimed to have had plans to construct THE largest tower in town (in the Middle Ages), alas, they never got very far but they can claim some gorgeous waterfront property with part of the church. And while admiring the structure, we found an ATM across the street...an added bonus.
The door above is just a small door on the side of St. Bavo's Cathedral. The entire front of the impressive cathedral is covered with scaffolding, which means they are spending lots of time and money to keep it beautiful. The Ghent Altarpiece resides here and is the main reason I came to this city. I'll see it later today when visiting St. Bavo's.
This is my neighborhood, in the Prinsenhof district.
I wandered all over the square in order to get the light coming through the upper reaches of one of the city buildings and was surprised when I realized the intricate work of the top of the structure.

You are a wonderful photographer! Sure makes me want to visit these wonderful places. Love the one of your neighborhood. Enjoy and safe travels!
